On the occasion of World Water Day 2026,Iniskoy Peace and Development Organization IPDO highlights the urgent water challenges faced in SWS, particularly in Baidoa.
Baidoa, one of the most populated and drought-affected areas in the region, continues to experience severe water shortages. Rapid population growth, displacement, and recurring droughts have increased pressure on already limited water resources.
Women and girls in Baidoa are disproportionately affected. They spend hours each day searching for water, often walking long distances under harsh conditions. This limits their access to education, affects their health, and reduces their participation in economic and social activities.
The 2026 theme, “Water and Gender – Where water flows, equality grows,” highlights the strong connection between water access and gender equality. Ensuring reliable and safe water sources in Baidoa will not only improve living conditions but also empower women and girls to reach their full potential.
IPDO calls for:
Immediate investment in sustainable water infrastructure in Baidoa
Expansion of boreholes and water supply systems
Inclusion of women in water governance and decision-making
Long-term solutions to address climate, related water scarcity
Improving water access in Baidoa is a critical step toward building resilient communities and promoting equality.
Water is life, and access to it must be ensured for everyone.
